Province Introducing Rent Controls

The province is putting a 2% cap on yearly rent increases until at least February of 2022.

The announcement comes after the governing Liberals resisted calls for rent controls.

Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Chuck Porter also announced today landlords will not be allowed evict people for renovations and the province is creating a commission to make recommendations on affordable housing strategies.

The Affordable Housing Commission’s members will include the Executive Director of the Cape Breton Community Housing Association, Fred Deveaux, as well as representatives from the Regional Municipality.

The commission is being asked to make its first set of recommendations within 6 months.
