Province Decides Against Roundabout at Grand Lake Rd./Hwy. 125

The Department of Transportation says it’s no longer considering a proposed roundabout at the intersection of Grand Lake Road and Highway 125, with access roads feeding in from Cow Bay Road. Instead, a tender has been issued for an overpass to provide access for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists across the soon-to-be twinned 125, connecting Cow Bay Road to Upper Prince Street in Sydney. The project will also involve an active transportation trail. The Department says that it decided against the roundabout when planners said that its construction would’ve spanned two construction seasons and significantly disrupted the traffic in the area, while still requiring an active transportation structure across the 125. Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says that an overpass will be a better, faster, and simpler solution, with the least disruption to nearby businesses and residents. Construction on the overpass is expected to begin this fall and be completed in the 2016 construction season.
