Province Announces Measures Meant To Improve Emergency Care

Health Minister Michelle Thompson and Health Authority CEO Karen Oldfield announced a number of actions this morning intended to improve care in emergency departments.

The list includes having teams led by doctors focus on getting patients out of ambulances and into the emergency department faster as well as assigning physician assistants and nurse practitioners to provide care in emergency departments.

The government also plans to add paid patient advocates in every emergency department.

The province has added a second air ambulance to handle routine transfers for tests and treatment between Sydney and Halifax and Yarmouth and Halifax.

Other actions include expanding services in more pharmacies and adding hours for virtual care appointments as well as allowing out-of-province doctors offer virtual care.
