Premier Stephen McNeil Planning To Step Down

Premier Stephen McNeil is planning to leave public office after a 17-year political career.

McNeil made the surprise announcement this afternoon after meeting with his cabinet.

He says he thought about stepping down earlier this year, but stayed on because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

McNeil says the party will need time to get things in order and he’ll stay on until that’s done.

Meanwhile, the province’s opposition leaders are wishing McNeil well.

PC Leader Tim Houston says McNeil and his family deserve thanks for their sacrifices during a life dedicated to public service.

NDP Leader Gary Burrill calls McNeil “a person of singular ability and drive”, and he says, despite their differences, he and McNeil have always enjoyed a relationship of mutual respect.
