An official with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers says all of the locals in the Atlantic region, including the CBRM, are going on strike.
The union’s National Director for the region, Jeff Callaghan, says they have no choice after the government announced today it’s given Canada Post permission to phase out home delivery.
Canada Post has also been given permission to close some post offices in rural areas as part of a plan to stabilize the Crown Corporation.
The federal Cabinet Minister responsible for the corporation, Joël Lightbound, echoed the conclusions of an industrial inquiry in May when he told reporters today Canada Post is effectively bankrupt and changes have to be made.
Lightbound says people getting home delivery will be transitioned to community mailboxes over nine years, with most of the change happening in the first four.
Canada Post says it will continue its accommodation program that allows for weekly home delivery or other options for people with mobility problems.
