Regional Police are warning people about a recently reported phone scam involving a request for bail money.
They say officers got three different reports yesterday about a caller claiming to be a lawyer and saying a family member had been arrested and needed money for bail.
They say the caller further intimidated people by threatening that telling anyone about the request could prevent their relative from getting bail.
Police say such calls, sometimes called phishing scams, can result in financial and identity theft.
If people have doubts about the call, they’re advised to hang up right away and phone the organization back directly to verify their claims.
Police say, if the call concerns a family member, people should get in touch with that person to confirm they’re not in trouble.
They say people should also verify any suspicious e-mails or text messages.
