Official Opening Today For Unique Indigenous Court In Wagmatcook

Lieutenant Governor Arthur LeBlanc, Premier Stephen McNeil and Justice Minister Mark Furey will all be in Wagmatcook this afternoon to officially open the new court in the community.

The court includes the province’s first Aboriginal Wellness and Gladue Court.

It’s among a few in the country that incorporates Indigenous restorative justice traditions and customs.

Its creation comes after a Marshall Inquiry recommendation calling for more Provincial Court sittings in indigenous communities.

It also hears Provincial Court matters for non-Indigenous people from Victoria County.

Today’s official opening is due to start at 1:00, this afternoon.
