The province says it will train up to 200 people for the new role of emergency medical responder over the next two years.
The Health Department says emergency medical responders will be partnered with a paramedic to expand the number of teams available to respond to an emergency call.
It says people trained as emergency medical responders can assess, stabilize and transport patients to hospital.
Several provinces already license and employ emergency medical responders.
The first group in Nova Scotia will be trained starting in March, with the first graduating class working by the summer.
