NS Adoption Records Opening In May

The Department of Community Services says adoption records will become open in the province on May 1st.

At that time, the Province’s Disclosure Program will start accepting applications under the Adoption Records Act.

The legislation allows adopted people 19 and older and their birth parents to access their information if they want to.

Community Services Minister Karla MacFarlane is encouraging people who want to protect their privacy to file a disclosure veto or contact notice.

A disclosure veto is a document saying an adopted person or birth parent does not want to share information that can identify them.

With a contact notice, people share identifying information and say how they want to be contacted or that they don’t want to be contacted.
