Canada Post says door-to-door mail delivery won’t end in Cape Breton until at least next year. In 2013, the Post office announced that door-to-door delivery would be eliminated across the country over the course of five years in order to cut costs. Canada Post spokesperson John Caines says areas that will be converted to community mailbox delivery this year have already been identified and Cape Breton is not among them. Meanwhile, Cape Breton Post Workers union local president Gordie MacDonald estimates that about 35,000 homes in Cape Breton will be affected by the end of door-to-door delivery. He adds morale among Cape Breton postal workers is low because they don’t know when the change will come about and exactly how it’s going to affect them.
