New Waterford Man Accused Of Bank Robbery In Singapore

A New Waterford man has been detained by police in Thailand in connection to a bank robbery in Singapore last week.

Singapore’s Straits Times says 26 year-old David James Roach walked into a bank in the island city-state last Thursday, presenting a note saying he was armed and wanted money.

He’s said to have walked away with about 29,000 dollars before flying to Bangkok.

Roach was tracked down and arrested by Thai Police on Sunday.

The Straits Times quotes Roach’s mother as saying her son was travelling abroad with friends.

One of his friends tells the newspaper she recently travelled with Roach to Turkey and Iran for nearly three months, and they also went to Nepal this year.

While not mentioning Roach by name, Global Affairs Canada says officials are providing consular assistance to a man who was arrested in Thailand.

A Thai newspaper quotes that country’s authorities saying that Roach will be extradited back to Singapore.
