New Ferry Named After Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy

The new ferry that will cross Little Narrows between Inverness and Victoria counties will be named the Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy.

The province says Grand Chief Sylliboy promoted Mi’kmaw language, culture and spirituality and played an important role in advancing reconciliation.

He died in 2017 at the age of 76.

The new ferry will bear his name after the Public Works Department held a naming contest at We’koqma’q Mi’kmaw School in Whycocomagh and the Rankin School of the Narrows in Iona.

The province says the ferry will begin operating later in the spring.
