New COVID Restrictions Announced

The rising number of COVID-19 cases has led to a number of new provincewide restrictions and the closure of schools in the Halifax area.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang says there’s no sign of community spread in Cape Breton as of yet but he’s warning people things can get worse quickly anywhere.

Strang also notes a person in their 20’s is among those now in hospital because of COVID-19.

He says that should be a wake-up call for younger people.

Among the new rules taking effect tomorrow morning, there’s now a total gathering limit of 10 indoors and outdoors, and there can be no social events, special events, festivals, arts and cultural events, sports events, wedding receptions, or funeral visitation or receptions.

The rules also include a 25 per cent indoor capacity limit for religious services to a maximum of a hundred people, or 150 outdoors with physical distancing, as well as a 50 percent capacity limit for bars and restaurants that will have to stop serving people at 11 at night.

The province also announced today it’s opening up its vaccination program to more people.

People 55 and over can now book an appointment for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as well as the AstraZeneca vaccine.
