Provincial Health Minister Randy Delorey announced Naloxone kits will be available free of charge in 300 community pharmacies throughout the province on September 1st.
Naloxone is medicine used to block the effects of opioids especially after an overdose.
Figures show naloxone has saved at least 40 lives since January 2016.
The program is a partnership between the government, pharmacy association of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
The Public Health Agency last month said over 2400 Canadians died last year because of opioid overdoses including roughly 53 in Nova Scotia. Roughly 2000 Canadians died in 2015 due to the drug.
