MV Miner Salvage Announcement, Today

The province will reveal the winning bidder for the MV Miner salvage today.

The vessel has been washed up on Scaterie Island since its tow line broke in September of 2011.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan will make the announcement at 11:00 this morning at the Coastal Discovery Centre in Main-à-Dieu.

People in the area have long lobbied for the removal of the wreck, saying it’s a threat to navigation and the local fishery.

However, the process was delayed because of jurisdictional wrangling between the province and the federal government.

The new Liberal government committed to removing the Miner and then talking to Ottawa about helping to share the cost.
