MV Miner Cleanup Could Start in Three to Four Weeks

The Antigonish company awarded the contract to remove the MV Miner says its hopes to be on the site in three to four weeks.

The province will pay R.J. MacDonald Construction 11.9 million dollars to remove the derelict vessel from Scaterie Island.

Company general manager and Glace Bay native, David MacDonald says they’ll begin by stabilizing the ship and removing debris.

He adds they’ll then work on dismantling the bulk carrier by stripping the steel away from the back to the front.

MacDonald says the company has 35 years experience working in marine construction and removed a smaller ship in a similar situation to the MV Miner in 2002.
