Municipality To Review Membership In NSFM, FCM, Other Groups

Regional Councillors voted today to review the municipality’s membership in some organizations, including the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Councillor Steve Gillespie made a motion asking staff to review the costs and benefits of being in the groups.

The request comes after some councillors expressed frustration with the provincial federation last month, when the group announced it’s supporting the province’s new funding arrangement with municipalities that was strongly criticized by Mayor Amanda MacDougall and councillors.

Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Campbell didn’t have a precise figure when asked today how much the municipality pays to be part of the provincial federation, but she estimates it’s about $60,000 a year.
