Municipality Looking Into Support To Help People Cope With Heat

Regional Mayor Amanda McDougall says the municipality’s Emergency Management Office has been working to prepare support for people trying to escape the heat, as a heat warning remains in effect across the province.

McDougall says cooling spaces will be opened where they’re needed and EMO has a list of spaces drawn up that meet its requirements.

Meanwhile, the Town House in Glace Bay says it’s opening its basement as a cooling centre from 11:00 this morning to 4:00 this afternoon.

MacDougall says other spaces are also available, such as libraries, where access is free.

She goes on to say the community homeless shelter has a severe weather space offering safe shelter to those who need support.

The municipality is working to try to find other safe spaces for cooling.

Its 311 line is open 24/7 and people are being encouraged to call and report any problems or concerns they have during the heat.
