More Possible School Closures Announced

The committee looking at closures in the Riverview Family of schools recommended shutting down three schools at a public meeting, last night.

On the list are George D. Lewis School in Louisbourg, East Bay School and MacLennan Middle School in Westmount.

However, the committee also says that proponents for George D. Lewis should be given ample time to develop a hub school proposal.

Under the changes, East Bay students will go to Mountainview Elementary in Howie Centre.

Students from MacLennan will go to Malcolm Munroe middle school in Sydney.

And, those from George D. Lewis will go to Riverside Elementary in Albert Bridge.

The school there will be changed to accommodate students up to Grade 8.

As well, the committee is proposing a boundary change that will see students from the Gabarus area that now go to school in Sydney River go to Marion Bridge, instead.

Meanwhile, the options committee for the Sydney Family of Schools also released its recommendations for school closures, last night.

The committee is recommending that Shipyard School in Sydney and Harbourside School in Whitney Pier close.

The plan would also see Whitney Pier Middle School become a Primary to Eight School and Mira Road Elementary become an overflow school.

The Committee is also suggesting the Shipyard could also possibly be renovated to accommodate School Board offices.
