by Education Minister Karen Casey is offering the group trying to save the school in Louisbourg a second chance.
The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has rejected a proposal to turn George D. Lewis School into a hub school and has slated it for closure at the end of this school year.
But Casey has written to the school board to propose funding a pilot project that could keep the school open.
The move comes after the George D. Lewis Gateways to Opportunity Society met with Education Department officials last week.
The Society says the Regional Municipality would like to move municipal staff in Louisbourg to the school building and adds two local businesses want to rent office space there.
It goes on to say there’s also support for the project from Cape Breton University and the Fortress of Louisbourg.
Meanwhile, School Board chair Darren Googoo says he expects the board will make a decision on Casey’s offer sometime next month.
