Mine Future Still Uncertain After Operators Meet With Premier

Premier Tim Houston says he had a productive discussion today with the operators of the Donkin Mine but there’s still no word on when or if the mine will re-open.

Ahead of the meeting, Kameron Coal said it wants any future stop-work orders at the mine to be shorter than the one that’s now in force but Houston reiterated today the government thinks the length of the process is appropriate given the priority of safety.

The order came after roof falls in July and the province has since set conditions for the mine to be able to re-open.

Houston says he thinks Kameron is seriously reconsidering re-opening the mine or else they wouldn’t have met with him.

Houston also told reporters he thinks the government and the mine owners have different levels of tolerance for risk when it comes to the safety of the operation.
