The first of three public meetings on a controversial expansion at the Margaree Airport takes place tonight. The meetings were called after Inverness County Council voted to go ahead with the 9.3 million dollar project in December, pending support from funding partners. However, Port Hawkesbury Mayor Billy Joe MacLean says the area can’t support two airports and an expansion in Margaree will spell the end of the Port Hastings Airport. Members of the Margaree Environmental Association are also against the expansion saying they’re worried what affect it will have on the nearby Margaree River and the salmon fishery there. Inverness councillor Jim Mustard describes the expansion plan as a bold and gutsy move that will boost local tourism. Tonight’s meeting on the expansion gets underway at 7:00 at the Cranton Crossroads Community Centre in Northeast Margaree.
