A Cape Bretoner has been appointed as Canada’s next top soldier.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this afternoon Vice-Admiral Art McDonald will be replacing outgoing Chief of Defense Staff General Jonathan Vance.

McDonald is a native of New Waterford and has served as the chief of the naval staff and commander of the Royal Canadian Navy since June of last year.

Vance announced in July he’s planning to retire by the end of the year.
