Mayor, Councillors Planning To Take Concerns To Halifax Next Week

Regional Council held a special meeting this afternoon to air concerns about a service exchange agreement proposed by the province.

The proposal sets out a formula for how much municipalities get from the province in what’s commonly known as equalization.

Mayor Amanda McDougall says the new formula would see the municipality’s equalization payments cut from 15 to 13 million dollars and she says the offer doesn’t do enough to address what she’s calling a crisis in housing and transit.

McDougall and some councillors are planning to go to Halifax next week to speak at a meeting of the legislature’s Law Amendments Committee.

McDougall says she wants local MLA’s to hear about the municipality’s concerns.

The municipality has also launched an advertising campaign to voice its concerns.
