Mass Casualty Commission Begins Public Hearings

The public inquiry into the April 2020 mass shooting in the province started this morning at the Halifax Convention Centre.

Twenty-two people and an unborn baby were killed in the shooting rampage carried out by a lone gunman dressed as an RCMP officer.

Premier Tim Houston issued a statement this morning before the public proceedings started.

Houston says he’s heard family members of people killed in the shooting express frustration and concern about the structure of the inquiry.

Inquiry chair and retired chief justice J. Michael MacDonald seemed to address those concerns in his opening remarks, saying commissioners will be respectful and transparent and they’re committed to getting answers about what happened.

MacDonald also says the Mass Casualty Commission will not cover up for RCMP or government as it carries out its work.
