Marine Atlantic Ferry Changes Course To Help Distressed Fishermen

A Marine Atlantic ferry changed course early yesterday morning to help two distressed fishermen.

The MV Highlanders was on its way from North Sydney when it joined two other ships responding to a fishing boat that ran aground 11 nautical miles east of Sydney

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax also dispatched a Hercules military plane, a Cormorant helicopter and three coast guard vessels.

A military official says the Highlanders was on scene when the two fishermen were taken onboard the helicopter.

He adds the fishermen were not injured but were brought from the airport to the Regional Hospital in Sydney.

Marine Atlantic says the Highlanders was delayed by about two hours arriving in Port aux Basques.
