Long-term Care Workers On Strike

More than 2,000 long-term care workers in the province are on strike today.

CUPE says workers at 24 homes walked off the job at 7:00 this morning, including Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney River, Seaview Manor in Glace Bay, Celtic Court in Membertou, the Northside Community Guest Home in North Sydney, and the Alderwood Guest Home in Baddeck.

The union represents more than 5,000 long-term care workers at 56 homes, and it says more workers could give strike notice in the days ahead.

It says the main outstanding issue in contract talks is wages.

Meanwhile, the province says it’s offering wage increases of between 12 and 24 per cent, depending on job classification, as well as a 70 per cent increase in shift and weekend premiums.

The government says the offer matches the deal already accepted by workers at 27 unionized long-term care homes and in home care and hospitals.
