Lockdown Announced In Halifax Area

A lockdown has been ordered in Halifax and some surrounding areas because of rising COVID-19 cases.

Premier Iain Rankin made the announcement this afternoon.

The lockdown starts at 8:00 Friday morning and will be in effect until at least May 20th.

The restrictions include an indoor and outdoor gathering limit of five people and each person at an illegal gathering can be fined $1000.

Among a long list of other restrictions, retail businesses and malls have to operate at 25 per cent capacity and restaurants are open to take-out only.

People from outside the Halifax area are being told to avoid travelling there unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Rankin says the province will make funding available to affected businesses through the Small Business Impact Grant.
