Local MLA Criticizes Government’s Position On Indigenous Issues

Sydney-Membertou MLA and Liberal House Leader Derek Mombourquette says the province is showing a lack of respect for Indigenous communities.

Justice Minister Scott Armstrong issued a directive to police last week to crack down on illegal cannabis operations and  asked Mi’kmaq chiefs for their co-operation.

Derek Mombourquette says the province should have consulted Indigenous leaders, and some were caught off guard.

He says the province should push ‘pause’ and have a conversation.

Membertou Chief Terry Paul said last week the province doesn’t have jurisdiction to govern Mi’kmaq communities, and doesn’t  have an understanding of what happens in them.
