Local Ambulance Services Overwhelmed: Union

The union representing the province’s paramedics says local ambulance services are under severe strain.

IUOE Local 727 says earlier this afternoon there weren’t enough ambulances available in the Regional Municipality to deal will all of the incoming calls.

It’s reporting similar problems today in the Health Authority’s northern and western zones.

This comes after the Regional Hospital ER saw what some doctors call a crisis over the holidays, with patients being left in beds in hallways and staff having to re-purpose washrooms and other spaces for assessments.

The Health Authority says similar problems were seen across the province because of an increase in the number of people going to Emergency Departments over the holidays.
