Mayor Amanda McDougall-Merrill says the Cape Breton Regional Library Board has decided to look at other possible locations for a new central library.
The statement came during today’s Regional Council meeting, when McDougall-Merrill told councillors about a workshop on February 28th with municipal staff, the library board, library staff and the library build committee.
She says she was later told the board wants to examine alternatives to the proposed site at the former Cape Breton County courthouse near Wenworth Park in Sydney.
The courthouse option was the subject of continued discussion today, with some councillors saying they think it’s time to make a decision on where to put the new library and some raising concerns about the long-term viability of the courthouse.
McDougall-Merrill told councillors the library board will pay for the cost of studying other options.
