Liberals Say Emergency Medical Responder Program Will Jeopardize Emergency Care

The Opposition Liberals say the Progressive Conservative government’s Emergency Medical Responder Program will jeopardize emergency care in the province.

The Grits say the program will replace one of two paramedics traditionally on an ambulance crew with an emergency medical responder that can’t provide emergency medical care.

Liberal Leader Zach Churchill says replacing a highly trained paramedic with what he calls an ambulance driver will have serious ramifications for Nova Scotians looking for emergency care.

The province says people trained as emergency medical responders can assess, stabilize and transport patients to hospital, and are already used in other provinces.

It says the first group of up to 200 in Nova Scotia will be trained starting in March, with the first graduating class working by the summer.
