Island Employment Audit On Agenda At Legislature Committee

The Legislature’s standing committee on public accounts is meeting this morning to deal with the Auditor General’s investigation of the Island Employment Association.

Kim Adair found what she calls the gross mismanagement of public funds at the now closed Cape Breton employment services agency exceeded a million dollars.

She says some Island Employment senior managers approved payments for extra compensation, overtime, employee bonuses, and travel claims that violated employment contracts and policies.

One of the two witnesses at this morning’s meeting is the Deputy Minister of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration that contracted out services to Island Employment.

Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union president Sandra MacMullen is also appearing as a witness because Island Employment workers were represented by the NSGEU.
