Highlanders Suspending Operations

The Cape Breton Highlanders say they’re suspending operations.

The pro-basketball team says it hasn’t been able to attract enough investment to prepare adequately for the upcoming NBL season.

The decision comes after the club made the playoffs for the first time this season, but ticket sales went down over the past three years and the team says it didn’t get the level of sponsorship it was hoping to see.

Highlanders President and General Manager Tyrone Levingston says he believes a different approach to marketing could be successful, but the team doesn’t have time to get the necessary funding before next season.

The team says its ownership group will spend the next few months working on a new business and marketing plan and meeting with investors to see if they’ll be able to come back in the 2020-21 season.
