Heavy Garbage Pickup Begins Today

Heavy Garbage Pickup in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality begins today.

Last month, Regional Council voted to go ahead with the annual service after considering the possibility of scrapping it.

Staff says ending the program would save 250-thousand dollars a year as the CBRM grapples with a 3 million dollar budget shortfall.

However, Councillors decided to go ahead with the pick up this year after saying they didn’t want to cancel or postpone it on short notice.

Mayor Cecil Clarke says Council will discuss the matter again, this summer.

Meanwhile only large, bulky, or heavy household items will be eligible for pickup.

Tires, vehicle parts, computers, televisions, concrete, and a host of other materials are not eligible.
