Regional Council has delayed a public hearing on a proposed bylaw change that would allow a high rise residential development on the corner of Ferry and Walker streets in Sydney near the former tar ponds.
Some environmental concerns were raised at a committee of the whole meeting last week after staff recommended council give first reading to the proposed change and schedule a public hearing.
At yesterday’s council meeting, municipal planner Peter van der Meulen presented an option to give first reading but delay the hearing until council gets a report from an environmental firm saying the site is safe for residential use.
Councillor Gordon MacDonald moved a motion to go with that option and council voted to support the motion.
