Group Wants To Bring 1000 Refugees To Cape Breton

A local group has set a goal to bring 1000 Syrian refugees to the Island.

Lifeline Syria Cape Breton announced the target at its meeting, last night at the Cedar’s Club in Sydney.

John Malcom heads the group’s finance committee and says a large number of immigrants would benefit Cape Breton as it deals with an aging and declining population.

He adds money will need to be raised to sponsor refugees.

The Sydney Credit Union has pledged the proceeds from tomorrow’s annual fundraising walk to the effort.

Malcom says he’d like to see the first Syrian families arrive in Cape Breton within the next year.
