Glace Bay Mom Plans To Take Dance Petition To School Board

The Glace Bay mother who started an online petition calling for the return of dances in middle school plans to submit it to board members and staff later this week.

Stefanie White says she wasn’t sure what to expect when she started the petition at change.org last week, but adds she’s been pleased by the amount of support it’s received.

The petition now has 1685 supporters.

White says she has a child in Grade 7 and another moving into Grade 6 next year and wants her kids to have the experience of going to school dances like she did.

The co-ordinator of school services for the Cape Breton-Victoria Board, Donnie Holland said earlier this week that the decision to end dances for Grades 6 to 8 is part of the board’s move to the middle school model.

He adds middle schools will still be able to host after-hours school activities, ranging from skating parties and game nights, to dancing lessons and more sporting events.
