Glace Bay Man To Be Sentenced For Assaulting Child

A Glace Bay man convicted of assaulting an 18-month old child is due back in court today to be sentenced.
30 year-old Donald Richard McGrath was found guilty of aggravated assault in August.
McGrath committed the crime in Glace Bay between May and October of 2014.

The child’s name is banned from publication.

It was first taken to hospital in Glace Bay before later being airlifted to the IWK hospital in Halifax.

Its injuries included hemorrhages in both eyes, a brain hemorrhage, a swollen and torn liver, five compression fractures to the spine and multiple bruising.

A specialist told the court the injuries were caused by severe shaking or blows to the body, or a combination of the two.

McGrath has been released on conditions to await today’s sentencing.
