Gabarus Seawall Repairs Nearly Complete

Repairs to the Gabarus seawall are almost complete.

Work to reinforce the crumbling structure began last fall.

Tim Menk with the Friends of Gabarus Society says the wall has been covered with armour stone designed to stabilize it.

There were fears the 70-year-old wall would be breached during a major storm, causing the village of Gabarus to be flooded.

The wooden structure was last repaired in the 1980s.

Menk expects the latest work on the wall to be finished in the next few weeks.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is kicking in 100-thousand dollars toward the 700-thousand dollar cost of the project.

The province and Ottawa are each contributing 300-thousand.
