Funeral For Desmond’s Wife and Daughter, Today

The funeral for the wife and daughter of an Afghan vet who killed them and his mother before taking his own life will be held in Antigonish County, today.

The service for Shanna Desmond and 10 year-old Aaliyah is due to get underway at 2:00 this afternoon at Donnelly Hall in Tracadie.

The bodies of the four family members were found inside an Upper Tracadie home on Tuesday of last week.

More than 300 people filled the pews in St. Peter’s Church in Tracadie yesterday for the funeral of Lionel Desmond and his mother Brenda.

His casket was draped with the Canadian flag and members of the military and the Royal Canadian Legion were among the mourners.

Father John Barry presided over the funeral and says it’s impossible to offer an explanation for what he describes as such a horrific tragedy.

Desmond’s family says he tried unsuccessfully to get help for his post traumatic stress disorder before the shootings took place.

The federal government has agreed to cover the cost of all four funerals.
