Fuel leak in Sydney’s North End causes road closures, evacuations

About 60 homes in Sydney’s North End were evacuated after a major fuel leak at the nearby Imperial Oil Esso storage facility yesterday.

Police say about 600 thousand litres of gasoline spilled after one of the tanks were punctured at around noon yesterday.

The fire department brought in two fire trucks from the airport to help contain the spill, by spraying a special foam around the tank and the earthen berm that surrounds it.

Imperial spokesperson Keri Scobie says the company is still working to determine what happened; she says officials do not believe the spill will have an effect at the pumps in Cape Breton.

People in the neighbourhood were allowed to return to their homes at around 7 o’clock last night.
