Frustration During Pre-Budget Talks

Frustration boiled over at yesterday’s special meeting of Cape Breton Regional Council as councillors discussed cuts to transit and the elimination of some school crossing guards.

A presentation prepared by Cape Breton Regional Police suggested cutting 9 crossing guard locations, saving more than 114,000 dollars a year, and reviewing 18 other locations in the future.

Utilities Manager Mike MacKeigan proposed cutting the transit service by 200 hours a week and bringing in an across-the-board two dollar fare with no transfers from route to route.

The move comes as Council tries to balance the budget in the face of a 5 million dollar shortfall.

Official budget deliberations will take place next week with further debate on proposed cuts.
