Four Glace Bay Area Schools Slated For Closure

There were some tense moments after a crowd of about 350 people learned last night which schools in the Glace Bay area are being recommended for closure.

The committee put together to review closure options is recommending that four schools be closed.

As revealed during a rally last week, the committee says MacDonald Elementary in Dominion and Tompkin’s Elementary in Reserve Mines should close with the students from both schools going to a renovated Bridgeport School.

The committee has also slated Gowrie Memorial School in Port Morien for closure with students there travelling to Donkin School.

And John Bernard Croak V.C. Memorial School in Glace Bay is also slated to be closed with students there going to St. Anne’s Elementary when the student population declines to a certain point.

Meanwhile, some in the crowd debated another option that would see a new Grade Primary to 5 school be built to house students from MacDonald, Tompkins and Bridgeport schools.

Others voiced concern about the closure of John Bernard Croak School.

The School Board is expected to make final decisions on school closures in April.
