Former Sydney Man Who Escaped From Burnside Jail Arrested

Halifax Police say they’ve arrested a former Sydney man who escaped from the Burnside Jail in Dartmouth, last month.

31 year-old Thomas Joseph Smith was one of two men who broke out on September 23^rd.

Police say officers spotted Smith in the area of Rosedale Avenue and Ropewalk Lane in Dartmouth at around 10:00 on Saturday night.

They Smith ran away when officers approached him but he was arrested without incident a short time later.

Smith was sentenced to four years in prison in 2018 after 54-year-old Jackie Deveau from Cheticamp was killed in a hit-and-run on the Sydney Bypass near the Regional Hospital.

The other man who escaped along with Smith was arrested in Halifax on October 4^th.
