Former Sydney Man Who Escaped From Burnside Jail Arrested

Halifax Police say they’ve arrested a former Sydney man who escaped from the Burnside Jail in Dartmouth, last month.

31 year-old Thomas Joseph Smith was one of two men who broke out on September 23rd.

Police say officers spotted Smith in the area of Rosedale Avenue and Ropewalk Lane in Dartmouth at around 10:00 on Saturday night.

They Smith ran away when officers approached him but he was arrested without incident a short time later.

Smith was sentenced to four years in prison in 2018 after 54-year-old Jackie Deveau from Cheticamp was killed in a hit-and-run on the Sydney Bypass near the Regional Hospital.

The other man who escaped along with Smith was arrested in Halifax on October 4th.
