Flags at Half Mast in Honour of Flora MacDonald

Flags at municipal buildings in the CBRM will fly at half mast today in honour of the late Flora MacDonald.

The North Sydney native and former Progressive Conservative M-P died in Ottawa early yesterday at the age of 89.

MacDonald was Canada’s first female secretary of state for external affairs.

She also served as minister of employment and immigration and minister of communications.

She was first elected as the M-P for the Ontario riding of Kingston and the Islands in 1972 and served for 15 years.

After leaving political office, MacDonald dedicated herself to humanitarian endeavours that took her to more than 100 countries on behalf of numerous international aid organizations.

Her funeral will be held in Ottawa in the coming days.

However, her brother Ron MacDonald from North Sydney says she’ll be buried in Cape Breton.
