First Job Fair For Donkin Mine

The company planning to open the Donkin Mine is holding its first job fair this week, but not in Cape Breton.

Kameron Coal is putting on a job fair tomorrow in Grande Cache, Alberta where a mine in that community shut down, last month.

The company’s vice-president of human resources Ed Griffith says they hope to attract experienced Cape Breton miners in Alberta who want to move back home to work in Donkin.

He adds Glace Bay company Gardiner Mining and Resources will also accept applications at its location in the People’s Mall in Glace Bay.

Griffith says they have about 30 people working at the Donkin site now and will hire a total of 120 people in several rounds over the next year.

Kameron Coal expects to cut the first piece of Donkin coal by late spring.

Meanwhile Donkin area councillor Kevin Saccary says the job fair in Alberta is great news.

He adds he hopes Kameron can sell its Donkin coal to Nova Scotia Power to increase its domestic market.
