First Cruise Ship Arrives, Unionized Stevedores Back

The first cruise ship of the season is docking in Sydney today and unionized stevedores will be tying it up.

A dispute over the hiring of non-unionized dock workers ended last week, when the Sydney Ports Corporation reversed its decision on the matter.

Members of Unifor Local 4624 and their supporters had threatened to picket the Sydney Marine Terminal when cruise ships were in port.

Peter Gillis with the International Longshoremen’s Association says he welcomes the move to continue with unionized stevedores.

The Holland America ship the Veendam is due to dock at the Joan Hariss Cruise Pavillion at 10:00, this morning

It’s the first of 79 cruise ships that are scheduled to visit Sydney, this year.

More than 107,000 passengers are expected to pass through the port between today and November 11th.
