Firm Chosen For Bayplex Work

The Regional Municipality has chosen the lead engineering firm for renovation work on the Bayplex in Glace Bay, but the original timeline for the work has changed.

Charlottetown-based I.B. Storey, Inc. will help and advise the project team during the developer selection and construction phases.

The municipality says a design brief for the reconstruction is expected early in the New Year, and that’ll be followed by an RFP for a developer.

The whole project was originally scheduled to be done by September of next year, but the renovated arena is now expected to open in September of 2020.

The municipality says the renovations will include extending the ice pad, a new ammonia plant, and changes to the building’s geothermal system, as well as improved building layout, roofing and cladding upgrades, electrical and lighting improvements, and plumbing upgrades.

The arena has been closed since last summer over concerns about structural problems and mold, and the three levels of government are each spending 3.25 million dollars on the renovations.
