Feds, Province Announce Money For New Public Housing

The federal and provincial governments have announced a total of $83 million to create 222 new public housing units, including 80 that will be barrier-free.

The province says the new housing will serve 522 families.

Provincial Housing Minister John Lohr says the bulk of the units will be built in the Halifax area and in Cape Breton.

He says he can’t give exact locations or a breakdown of the numbers in each area yet but the units will be on public housing properties.

Lohr had earlier been more reluctant to build public housing but he says that changed because of the housing crisis, support from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and department staff who said renovating old units is inefficient.

Lohr says he expects construction will start in the spring and the new units will be ready sometime in fiscal year 2025.
